Being young in the artworld has its benefits and its pitfalls,
but what would the artworld be without its ups and downs.
When starting off as a young artist, you run into the artworld with eyes wide open, willing to absorb all the information that comes your way and eager to engage as much as you can.
You, if of the correct mindset, create mounds of work pushing on, as many young artists do, from the hype of graduation and hopefully a sale or two, or even an accolade.
This is a vital moment in an artist’s career, the understanding that you are now in the world of art, that you will very much have to face rejection on a regular basis, not that your art isn’t good, but that it might just not be what is being looked for by that specific gallery or open call, the understanding that you need to keep going, that because of your age galleries may not take you one hundred percent seriously, but you need to show them that your age is but a number.
And yes being young may mean that you side-eyed by some of the more snooty members of the artworld, but hold your own and let your talents and passion speak wonders.
Group shows with artists of all ages and levels is a great way to get talking to artists who may have already done the steps you are currently going through, talk to them and listen to what they have to say, some of it may be extremely useful, some may just be about the time they nearly purchased a one of a kind Chapman brothers artwork from their university degree show fund raiser…. (longingly looks at the empty spot on the wall where it should be hanging).
As long as you keep working hard and making that art that you love to create, people will see the passion that is in the work and will take notice, then the benefits of being young can help, people want to get your work while you are still new and fresh, when they can in their eyes grab a bargain. A great place to display and exchange your art and for rubbing digital shoulders with some of the leading digital artists is Blockchain Art Exchange.
So swings and roundabouts for being young in art, there are many more points, but the main thing to remember is just to keep making your work and love what you do.
